Moretum is a sparkling wine-based alcoholic drink – 15.5% alcohol – very popular in the Middle Ages. The recipe used to produce this delicious Elixir dates back to this time in history. At the time there were 3 drinks dedicated to the high society: Hydromel, Hypocras and Moretum.
The later – made with red wine, blackberry liquor, redcurrant jelly, honey, alcohol and cinnamon – is not the most heard of to date but is very appreciated by many people nowadays.
There is a definite taste of the sugar and the jelly from the redcurrant and the blackberry liquor; the cinnamon brings a spicy note and the honey is particularly noticeable afterwards although not as strong when compared with the Hydromel. Red wine is the main ingredient bringing it all together.
This drink is usually served for Aperitif before a meal with ice cubes (5cl) but it can equally be used as a dessert wine. It may also be drunk hot during winter and is particularly popular with the ladies. We have been able to reproduce the Elixir following some in-depth research through Middle Ages culinary books and precautious procedures. Alcohol abuse can harm your health.
